Well if these definitions are correct the US was a socialist country from
the days of Alexander Hamilton till the Civil War, at least, since the
"American System" then in place was rooted in high tariffs to protect urban
workers to the detriment of western and southern farmers.

Some believe those tariffs helped build an industrial US.

On the other hand doing what the Chinese are doing to preserve their
current political system may help them short term but like with the
Japanese the dollars they are hoarding will turn to ashes as they wait for
a return. They can expect to lose 70 to 90% of the value of those dollars
in the interim IMO.
