There are so many links in the chain that I find it hard to draw conclusions 
about anything other than the quality of those specific
feeds as shown on that specific monitor from that specific box (which uses 
whatever specific internal chips and processing) with
that specific content encoded in that specific way over that specific channel.

Philips makes it very clear in the manual that this DVDR/PVR is a SD output 
unit only. Which is why I was not terribly surprised
when I found little difference in quality between the 480p component output and 
the S-video output, at least when viewing OTA
broadcasts. I did not make the comarison when viewing DVDs, so that could be 
much different for all I know.

And no, no way does the 480p output even approach the quality of 1080i, when 
viewing OTA broadcasts.
