Great points, Bert.

Heroes -- almost by definition -- do not draw attention to their heroism.
Nor, do they film re-enactments of their "feats."

Excellent question.

It seems somehow inappropriate (IMO of course) to
have taken the stance he took after the fact, which
was his right, and then now portray himself as the
war hero. Heroes don't denigrate others who were
stuck in similar circumstances through no choice of
their own. Nor are true heroes shameless
self-promoters.

Having been "inconvenienced" very much as he was,
about the same time, about the same place, and in
a similar capacity (destroyers rather than PBRs),
but for a couple of months longer than he, I can
safely say that it would make my skin crawl to
make a big deal pretense out of the ordeal. I
would have left it in the background. Just my
opinion.
