Tom; They've been required to pass along program-related PSIP for years and years. Many do. To do so effectively, they need to create CVCT (cable virtual channel table) entries for each over the air virtual channel. Many encoders do this, One cable engineering executive told me during the summer that Harmonic encoders do this particularly well, and almost automatically. You need the CVCT (entry) because EPG events need a binding context, called the source_id, to link to, then the CVCT entry needs to be bound to the program_number field in the PAT and in the header of the Program Map Table. To the extent that cable operators "do their own thing" they have not been complying with FCC rules. Their EPGs are okay for navigating, but since they get their information from listing services, they are about as accurate as newspaper listings. Want an example? Many people missed the last finale section of "American Idol" because the winner wasn't announced until after the scheduled end of the program. No basketball, football or baseball game can be scheduled accurately in advance. In some cases, networks don't know what football game will be sent to a particular station until a second before the switch is made. hth John Willkie -----Mensaje original----- De: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] En nombre de Tom Barry Enviado el: Saturday, January 24, 2009 3:11 PM Para: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Asunto: [opendtv] Re: Senators Reach DTV Delay Compromise John - What is the status of cable operators using or passing along PSIP info. It seems there was some discussion about this and they were not yet required to do anything with PSIP but there was a possibility of it being used. Is there? Or are the cable operators going to just continue to do their own thing with only their own info? - Tom John Willkie wrote: > Agree on all points, Frank.
