Not only the distribution chain. The entire production chain can't handle it.

Fortunately it does not matter. 1280 x 720@60P is more adequate for 
HD sports...MUCH better than 1080@30i, and for all practical purposes 
1080@60P.

You may recall a post from Mark Schubin recently about the 
Thomson/GVG World Cam, which has sensors that oversample. It can 
output either 1280 x 720@60P or 1920 x 1080@30i.

The answer is not pushing the production chain to the limit. The 
answer is oversampling, then resampling for distribution to achieve 
good MTF, and less stress on the compression system.

There is nothing magic about 1080 lines, unless you are watching a huge screen.
