Better prediction makes for more efficient compression
which make a noticeable difference in environments that
are already bandwidth challenged, even with comparable
GOP lengths. As you would expect, finer grained motion
compensation pays off with the 352x480 and 528x480 formats
commonly used in on demand application today.

If you mean hitting the magic 50% reduction without
very long GOPs, then yes, I agree, that message gets
lost amongst the trumpeting and foot stamping.
