RadioScape pushes DMB for mobile TV in China John Walko (03/15/2006 6:18 AM EST) URL: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=3D181503797 LONDON - RadioScape has won contracts to supply five more Digital Multimedia Broadcast (DMB) and Enhanced Packet Mode (EPM) transmission systems for mobile TV operators in China, bringing the total to nine in the past few months. The company says the contracts are the fruits of at least two years of courting Chinese authorities about its DAB-based mobile TV technology and helping them evaluate the most appropriate technologies for the service, and choosing between DMB, DVB-H and DMB-T. RadioScape (London, England) says there is a massive potential for mobile TV in China, and the success of DMB-based services in Korea bodes well. The latest multiplexer contracts are for operators scheduling to offer services in major conurbations including Beijing and Shanghai. The company offers both radio transmission and mobile TV reception technology and expertise, and is involved in the recently announced BT Movio trial for mobile TV in the UK, that uses digital audio broadcasting technology. RadioScape's broadcast system is used to multiplex the multimedia streams using Enhanced Packet Mode to ensure the robust delivery of content to mobile phones. "We are the leading provider of DMB broadcasting systems in China," said John Hall, RadioScape's CEO. "We have been working closely with the major Chinese broadcasters over the past two years and, having won contracts with leading broadcasters in the major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, we are confident that other broadcasters will follow their lead and specify our solution." RadioScape now has systems that are broadcasting or shortly coming on stream at Beijing Jolon Digital Media Broadcasting, Shanghai Oriental Pearl (Group), Guangdong Yue Guang Digital Multimedia Broadcasting and others soon to be announced. The company has supplied over twenty DAB/DMB Research and Test systems to Korea, which are being used by leading companies and research institutes to allow them to develop and plan the roll out of DMB networks and receivers. "Korea is leading the world in Mobile TV," added Hall. "They have recognised that DMB provides a means of delivering Mobile TV now as it is based on proven working technology and spectrum is already available in most countries unlike rival technologies." He adds that because of this lead, Korean manufacturers have a ready and growing home market for their DMB handsets that are available in volume and at competitive prices for other countries as they deploy DMB-based Mobile TV. Hall suggests half a million handsets have already been ordered to support the rollout of DMB in China. All material on this site Copyright 2006 CMP Media LLC.
