x264 is free. You may have to compile it for your platform though. It works quite well. http://www.videolan.org/x264.html Mainconcept is commercial, and from what I understand, buggy (at least, so the x264 folks say). I don't believe there is any x86 CPU capable of decoding 1080P. I'd like to see that Mac do it.
