Anyway, I think UHDTV can be deployed easily enough, over cable and terrestrial anyway, *if* the hype about codecs is real. My idea would be (mostly applicable to OTA):

1. Hold the hypesters' feet to the fire. Demonstrate that H.265 compression is in practice 4 times as efficient as H.262 (MPEG-2 compression).

2. Downres existing MPEG-2 HD broadcast streams to SD streams, and replace each HD stream with a H.265 UHD stream. This UHD should take up the same b/s as the HD stream of today. This step may possibly remove one SD subchannel, assuming the station is using its multiplex to max capacity (which is doubtful).

3. During the transitional period, make available low-cost STBs that are UHD-capable, and can output HD and SD of any broadcast.

4. At the end of the short transitional period, eliminate the SD version of the UHD streams, to quit wasting bandiwdth. Possibly, start transmitting even the SD channels with H.265 compression and really do this right.

Cable systems can follow this same approach, although they are already wasting bandwidth with SD copies of HD broadcasts.

Are you suggesting ANOTHER DTV transition?

;-)
