1600x900 is extremely popular in the 17-19 inch size.

It is most likely a spin-off of LCD manufacture for televisions. The first generation LCD televisions were 4:3, second generation LCDs (in smaller sizes) were 16:10, and now even the smallest LCD television is 16:0. Computer LCD monitors followed suit in parallel with consumer televisions.

Looks like John may be right for larger monitors (>21"). Most of these are 1920 x 1080, although there are still a fair number with higher resolutions at different aspect ratios. I suspect this is an artifact of the growing consumer market for 20-30 inch DTV displays, AND the fact that more people are watching TV, but not creating content, on their computers.
