Longtime CBS Chairman Leslie Moonves, who in June was named co-president of parent company Viacom ( VIA ) along with MTV Networks Chief Tom Freston, is arguably one of the few TV executives around with the "golden gut" -- the ability to divine hits and raise ratings. After joining CBS in 1995, he has made it the top-rated network among household viewers three of the last four years. In his first public appearance since getting the Viacom top job, Moonves held court on July 18 during the Television Critics Assn. gathering in Los Angeles. Moonves touched on some of the hot topics of the day, including the move in Washington to reign in TV's showing of so-called indecent programming.
