LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 2004-- DVD=20
Players in More Than 63 Million U.S. Homes

DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group announced=20
DVD hardware and software sales figures for the=20
third quarter at today's TV on DVD Conference.

According to figures compiled by Kaplan, Swicker=20
& Simha on behalf of the DEG, approximately 340=20
million DVDs shipped in the third quarter of=20
2004, a 59 percent increase over the same period=20
last year. Setting another DVD record, nearly one=20
billion discs shipped so far this year, bringing=20
the total number of DVDs shipped since launch to=20
more than 3.3 billion.

The holiday selling season is anticipated to=20
provide another record-breaking fourth quarter=20
for the popular home entertainment format,=20
supported by new releases of more than $4 billion=20
of box office hits. In addition to these=20
blockbuster films, a variety of genres such as TV=20
series, classics, special interest and music=20
titles continue to fuel DVD sales with nearly=20
38,000 titles currently available.

"The unprecedented growth of the DVD format is a=20
true testament of the partnerships between the=20
hardware, software and retail industries," said=20
Bob Chapek, president, DEG, and president, Buena=20
Vista Home Entertainment. "In the coming years,=20
those alliances will be put to the ultimate test=20
in defining the next generation of players. As=20
all of our industries have learned from the DVD=20
format, these cooperative efforts are the only=20
thing that will help the next generation to grow."

Strong Hardware Sales Continue, Ramping up for 4th Quarter

According to figures compiled by DEG: The=20
Digital Entertainment Group, based on data from=20
the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA),=20
retailers and manufacturers, the consumer=20
electronics industry experienced its strongest=20
third quarter ever, with nearly 6.6 million DVD=20
players sold to U.S. consumers. Nearly 110=20
million DVD players have sold since launch=20
(including set-top and portable DVD players,=20
Home-Theater-in-a-Box systems, TV/DVD and DVD/VCR=20
combination players), bringing the number of DVD=20
households to over 63 million. Currently, 42=20
percent of all U.S. DVD households have two or=20
more DVD players.

"As the consumer electronics industry continues=20
its transition to high definition, DVD remains=20
the principal driver by bringing the benefits of=20
high quality video and audio to the widest=20
possible audience," said Mike Fidler, vice=20
president, DEG, and senior vice president, Home=20
Products Division, Sony Electronics. "In=20
addition, the ever expanding range of DVD=20
lifestyle applications is creating a variety of=20
new business opportunities for us all."
