It's also easy to forget that that was becasue, after about 1959 or 60, the TV sets, not the transmissions. I got acolor TV in 1962. It gave beautiful colors and quite reliably so. You only had to tweek the hue control rarely.
OF course, it was a Heathkit and was a no-holds-barred plenty of tubes design. It also had a correct, linear, color matrix. Many sets had matrices that very strongly rejected the Q axis (green-magenta) so everything was gray, blue, or orange. THIS was the main problem with US TV until well into the transistor era.
