Which doesn't explain why many of the Drive-Ins in CA (like the one near
Knott-so-Merry Farm) are abandoned lots. 

In fact, there is a whole scene being built around using the lot and old
screen with a portable projector, a generator, and low power FM
transmitter. For some folks, we have come full circle - the movie
cinemas that outdid the drive-in with their stadium seating, THX sound
and 26" wide cupholders have become too greedy for their own good:
