Arlington, VA - 06/05/2014 - According to a new study from the Consumer
Electronics Association (CEA)(r), The Market for U.S. Household Television
Services, the percentage of U.S. households with a television that relies
exclusively on an antenna for television programming reception (six percent) is
about to be eclipsed for the first time ever by the percentage of households
relying only on the Internet for TV programming (five percent). CEA data since
2005 shows a continuous decline in the percentage of U.S. TV households relying
only on antennas for programming.

Interesting but misleading numbers. I don't know why the CEA always feels
compelled to promote, directly or indirectly, MVPDs. The number that tells the
*whole story* is households that rely on a combination of OTA and Internet. In
the US, for TV, people have to rely on OTA for anything live. As opposed to
other countries, which happily simulcast FOTA TV also FOTI.

If you remember, the CEA was also broadcasting the FUD about ATSC receivers
adding $200 to TV sets. Instead of describing improvements in DTT reception,
with the aim of promoting sales of more CE equipment, the CEA then and now
seems to prefer to do whatever they can to promote the interests of walled
gardens.

The simple fact is, only approximately 80 to 81 percent of US households
currently subscribe to "the bundle," and perhaps still as much as 85 percent
have cable/DBS at all. Which means that ~20 percent of US households either use
quite a bit of Internet plus basic-basic cable, or Internet plus OTA. The fact
that exclusive-Internet and exclusive-OTA numbers are very small comes close to
being a big "so what."
