You make a valid observation, IMO.
In England anyway, networks began converting the 625 SD product to 16x9
format some time ago and with it's visual superiority, it more closely
represents the image capabilities of smaller LCD screens.

I began seeing many wide screen format 26 - 30" TVs in stores there almost
ten years ago and they are now common place in homes.

(disclaimer: This does not mean I support claims that 625 16x9 SD is equal
in image quality to the HD formats, given the display used is sized
correctly for the viewing distance and actually has HD capabilities).
