I should point out that the "new" codec that ships in the Windows Media
10 Player is VC-1, also known as the "Advanced Profile" of Windows Media
9. =20

WM10 does not obsolete the SMPTE submission ... it's actually the first
commercial release of the codec as submitted to SMPTE.

The actual codecs might not have changed, I don't
know whether they have or not, but I note that
Microsoft is beyond WM9 already. WM10 is out.

Possibly, Microsoft will obsolete its own WM9
codecs before they have a chance to even become
an industry standard?

Others believe that political infighting might make VC-1 a
short-lived, interim industry standard that eventually gives
way to H.264/MPEG-4 AVC.
