JIJI: Tokyo, Dec. 24 (Jiji Press)--Victor Co. of=20 Japan , better known as JVC, said Friday it has=20 developed what it claims to be the world's first=20 read-only disc capable of storing data in both=20 the Blu-ray Disc format and the conventional DVD=20 format. The new disc is intended to smooth a transition=20 from DVDs to the next-generation disc. Its dual=20 use was made possible by a special filter that=20 reflects blue laser beams, used to read Blu-ray=20 data, while letting red laser beams, used for DVD=20 data. The film was embedded between the new=20 disc's Blu-ray data area, located 0.1 millimeter=20 deep from the surface, and its DVD area, at 0.6=20 millimeter deep. JVC plans to mass produce a disc combining a=20 single-layer Blu-ray data area with a=20 33.5-gigabyte capacity and a 8.5-GB dual-layer=20 DVD area, starting in 2006 at the earliest. The Blu-ray Disc is a next-generation DVD format=20 being promoted by a group led by Sony Corp. ,=20 Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. and others.=20 The group is vying with another, led by Toshiba=20 Corp. , NEC Corp. and others, which is pushing=20 for the High-Definition DVD format.
