HD Set Sales Surged During Holiday Rush
Manufacturers Report Q4 Sales Doubled From '05

Though retailers posted modest overall sales gains during the holiday season, HDTV sets have flown off the shelves.

Initial reports coming from manufacturers suggest consumers purchased more than twice as many HDTVs during fourth quarter 2006 compared with the same period last year, according to Quixel Research.

"We probably sold twice as much as last year in Q4, and Black Friday was well over double," said Tamaryn Pratt, principal analyst at Quixel Research.

As expected, LCD-set sales continued to surge compared to plasma, due a wider variety of screen sizes. Quixel estimated that LCD sales about doubled plasma purchases.

Overall sales were on par with expectations due to the tremendous drop in prices during the holiday season.

Major retailers such as Best Buy, Circuit City and Wal-Mart were selling HDTVs at such low prices to remain competitive that profits were slim despite the high volume of sales, according to several news reports.

For those who have not yet taken the HDTV plunge, prices should continue to drop this month. Though February and Super Bowl sale prices are often less than impressive, new set models are typically launched in late March and April. Retailers will clear out their existing stock to make room for the new sets, which will likely have even lower suggested retail prices than current models.

"You will get more for your money when the new models first come out, and then they'll decline another 30 to 40 percent by the end of the year," Ms. Pratt said.
