"Given that, what incentive do the national networks have in luring viewers away from DBS/Cable? "

Isn't it more about the local broadcasters rather than the networks? Its about local broadcasters and cable operators - the companies distributing content. Arguably, if local broadcasters can draw more viewers, they can generate more ad revenue. Cable operators dont own the cable channels. Its the content owners that have the strongest hand, not the distributors. Sure cable and satellite has all the eyeballs today, but whats to stop History channel (owned by NBC) to start showing up over the air? Maybe cable operators will threaten to pull the channel hoping NBC wont want to risk the revenue hit. Aren't content owners going to wrestle back control? Thats why NBC split with Apple.

What I dont get is why the broadcasters arent out there trying to get new customers given their new-found bandwidth. They seem to be all over mobile broadcast, but when it comes to DTV - you just get blank stares and shrugged shoulders.

Because ABC/Disney owns ESPN, Fox owns Fox Sports and Fox News, NBC owns CNBC and MSNBC, and CBS owns Showtime, and through it's parent corporation National Amusements still has ties to all of the Viacom channels including the MTV networks.

Given that, what incentive do the national networks have in luring viewers away from DBS/Cable?

John
