I sent this note to a friend who wrote back:"I agree with Jobs... Having been involved in video archiving for more than a decade I can honestly say that there are literally hundreds of video and audio codecs which compress the data to serve a particular niche. I am not aware of any niche that has not been beat to death. Every single codec is designed for a purpose and that purpose is to make money for the designer (why else?). They come up with technical yada-yada to say why it is better than another but it is just propaganda. Personally, I prefer plain old MPEG for most applications."
