That's an absurd comment, Bob.

All systems are saddled with legacy. Try using DTMB in a DVB-T country.
Or try drawing benefits from DVB-T2 with a DVB-T receiver.

Actually this is FAR from true.

The DBS systems are migrating at least their HDTV subscribers to H.264. SOmehow, they seem to be able to deal with legacy issues.

But far more important here, if we keep moving down this ATSC path we will reach a point where the standard will be so obsolete as to require a reset. IMHO this will happen by 2012.

At that point anything will be possible, legacy receivers be damned. At least virtually ALL of the new HDTV capable displays have high quality signal paths that can be used with STBs.

Bert may not love STBs, but most American have little problem with them, especially if they support desirable services such as integrated program guides and PVRs. Eventually, broadcasters will wake up, request a new proceeding to update the DTV standard, and develop competitive platforms for fixed, portable and mobile applications.

Or they will just fade-to-black (oblivion).

Craig
