>And they (ATSC) fully support 60 Hz and progressive modes.< Yes, they did, and yet they (Sony, CBS et al) also insisted, and prevailed, that interlace be the foundation of the standard. Which Craig, who was also there in the early days, can confirm. >You can do this with the mere stroke of a pen< I do think that you, having been involved in such a process, know better. -----Original Message----- From: opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:opendtv-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Manfredi, Albert E Sent: Wednesday, September 07, 2011 3:01 PM To: opendtv@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [opendtv] Re: New ATSC 3.0 Technology Group Formed to Anticipate TV of the Future Dale Kelly wrote: >> No one is forcing ATSC to use 59.94, except for equipment > manufacturers. > > True but, as a practical matter, ATSC is the Equipment Manufacturers. > They control the voting majority and are also most often supported by > the big 3 TV Networks. And they (ATSC) fully support 60 Hz and progressive modes. If broadcasters/networks want to eliminate interlaced and 59.94 fps, by far the easiest approach, *as far as standards are concerned*, is to strike them out of ATSC, and leave the rest as is! You can do this with the mere stroke of a pen. Changing out the actual hardware, to eliminate 59.94 and progressive, becomes far easier to do this way, than by rewriting a whole new standard. Because the transitional period is a snap. As opposed to being a mess.
