Sorry, but that's ultra-right-of-center claptrap.
Your opinion. I posted the article because it represents an important point of
view. It is clearly aligned with a less intrusive view of government
regulation, but ultra-right-of-center clap trap is absurd. The Title II
approach was clearly expected from this administration - the court decision was
not expected, but is consistent with that court. Clearly there will be an
appeal.
Net neutrality has its origins more than a century ago, when the telephone
company networks were required to connect to one another, to carry one
another's telephone calls. The premise has not changed since.
It has changed radically over the years. Remember when long distance was a
metered by the minute service?
We paid dearly for decades of regulation and monopoly pricing.
As the article points out, the Internet helped to eliminate the need for Title
II regulation of telephony... NOT THE FCC.
After numerous failed attempts to get its nose under the tent, the FCC took
advantage of "hope and change," and took the radical approach of applying a
nearly century old regulatory regime to a new infrastructure, in order to
impose government regulation and create another monopoly/oligopoly to justify
the agencies existence.
Let's not even talk about the ways in which this administration has used the
Internet to invade our privacy, or the back doors they have built into the
Internet infrastructure and those they would like to build into the devices we
use with the new infrastructure.
It's hardly some new-fangled, new deal, left wing invention. Given that the
job of providing broadband access has gone entirely to previously-walled-in
cable company networks, as opposed to the original freely competitive ISP
dialup networks, it makes a lot of sense to include the same neutrality
expectations of the broadband providers as we expect of our voice telephone
service. Especially now that broadband Internet is being used extensively for
TV content distribution, previously the exclusive role of said cable networks.
The Internet has functionally replaced the voice telephone network. Everyone
expects the same neutral service from their Internet connection, as they have
always expected from their telephone service. Most people who think they
oppose the notion seem clueless, making arguments that are totally
contradictory, oblivious of the fact that Title II has existed all their
lives.
Common sense prevailed.
