In case anyone in the NY area is interested, there will be a SMPTE meeting on the live HD Metropolitan Opera global cinemacasts next Tuesday evening, March 13, at 6:30 pm (refreshments earlier) at the Montel studio at 433 West 53rd Street.

It will cover everything from the first Met broadcasts (1910 radio, 1940 TV), through the first multi-city cinemacasts (1952), the low-light-level and contrast-compression experiments (1973), the "Live from the Met" series (1977), the beginning of thousand-line HD production (1990), pay-per-view (1991), plazacasts (2001), opera on the Times Square screens (2006), and the current sold-out live (and encore) HD cinemacasts to theaters around the world (with live subtitles in different languages).

There will be discussions of colorimetry, gamma, luma equations, and surround-sound systems, as they relate to different forms of presentation. There will be descriptions of the crazy-quilt of global fiber and satellite transmission paths.

No questions are off limits.

It's free, and all are invited.
