Now it is more complicated than that, because of the difference in D.O.F. depending on film/sensor size, film grain, etc., but in general it's harder to utilize the full possible resolution of more-pixel formats, for three-dimensional scenes. This is an incurable consequence of the wave nature of light. It of course is not a problem with two dimensional source material, like paintings.
