Three words: depth of focus.

Now it is more complicated than that, because of the
difference in D.O.F. depending on film/sensor size,
film grain, etc., but in general it's harder to utilize
the full possible resolution of more-pixel formats, for
three-dimensional scenes. This is an incurable consequence
of the wave nature of light. It of course is not a problem
with two dimensional source material, like paintings.
