This is where the content owners and distribution players are
getting it all wrong. Limiting viewership to one type of device
and one distribution outlet is not serving the viewers, i.e., fans,
and will not be a success. If the customer pays for the content,
they want to watch the content, anywhere on anything. No
special carrier, no special device.

And that's basically the "TV Everywhere" business model, which has existed for some time for non-sports content, and now, with lots of fanfare, Dish also offers with ESPN content. Add devices, but add these optional devices only to legacy walled garden distribution (i.e. offer the car owner some room to park his car in the stables, while charging him still for feeding and grooming the horses, and cleaning up the horse manure).

As appealing as that might be for the most avid sports fans, it's pretty ho hum for many other people, especially among the younger demographic, we are told.

NASCAR got it wrong. They went to cable and closed viewing
portals on the superfluous content. The result was their fan base
dwindled which they are now trying to get back.

You can't blame these organizations for being greedy, but there's the right way and the wrong way even with greed. All we need is a few more years of falling MVPD subscriptions to yank the mindset into a new course.
