I have the distinct feeling that if any of these formats survive, it will be Blu-ray. But it could also go the way of L-cassette and the digital compact cassette. Better, but basically no one really cared enough, and they were soon overtaken by events. SACD and DVD-A? Similar sort of thing.
Not really, SACD and DVD-A. Both of those are not new hardware as the HD formats are. They are just software on top of a DVD player. It costs almost nothing to include them in the player and the actual disks are produced on DVD lines. I have some SACDs and find that they are actually becoming quite common. (That's common relative to all classical music, of course, a niche within a niche.)
