I have a question to this community. What technology is used by broadcasters
when they need some local content real fast? Do they use consumer products
such as mobile phones/tablets and consumer apps or some other technology?

I hope others with more knowledge about this subject will elaborate, but here
is some info I am aware of.

At the most professional level, Bonded Cellular seems to be a major growth
market. In essence these are products that interface directly with
professional camcorders. They encode the live content from the camera, and
stream it to the station via multiple cellular data channels (3G, 4G, LTE)
using IP encapsulation and transport. Many stations now use this technology
for live feeds rather than microwave links that take time to set up. Here are
a few links that talk about the technology and products.

Here in Gainesville at least one station is using Canon DSLRs for news and
production. There are tons of accessories that make them practical for video
acquisition, not to mention the versatility of interchangeable lenses. I
don't know if anyone is using bonded cellular here.

I see tripod mounted iPhones at many press conferences covered by the news
channels. It is quite easy to do light editing and upload video streams on
the phone or with a tablet or laptop.

I don't know if anyone is using Apple's FaceTime (or Android equivalents) for
live feeds, but it should work. I think Skype is now used routinely by the
news channels for remote feeds where satellite facilities are not available.

Anyone out there with some real world experience?

Regards
Craig
