The article states that "most sports events are not broadcast OTA anymore," or words to that effect. So my question is, assuming that these portables are indeed a big hit, would that not put pressure on the sports franchises to get their games on OTA TV? At least on the M/H channels of OTA?

And to prevent the knee-jerk reaction about subscriber fees, why wouldn't the advertizers themselves want this (and therefore pay for it), ASSUMING that mobile OTA TV becomes a hit?

Or is that too much of a vicious cycle?

The sports franchises want to limit access and monetize everything. They see mobile TV as a new revenue generating opportunity - advertiser support does little to accomplish this goal unless they can sell mobile ads at a significant premium. Simply simulcasting what is on the FTA channel is not an option as this does not generate any significant increase in ad revenues.

In some cases the leagues are developing their own services like Major League Baseball.com, and cutting out the middlemen.

Craig
