[opendtv] Re: Microsoft mum on Xbox 360 HD DVD support

Microsoft has been promoting the HD features of xbox 360, and brags about
the number of HD downloads. I suspect that they will want to be able to do
that well into the future. Shame (now) that you can't just plug in a USB or
internal Blu Ray drive, like with a PC.

They might have the right to make their own players, but like you, I think
that is a bridge too far.

I do enjoy watching the spots on tv for movies that are only available (in
HD) on HD-DVD. I suspect that tag line won't be seen in coming releases.

Technically speaking, Toshiba may have been the major supporter of the HD
DVD format (by a LONG shot), but they were really not HD DVD in and of
itself. I would assume that the HD DVD format is still an offering of the
DVD Forum and the HD DVD Promotion Group and anybody could still license or
continue to license the technology. But why would anybody want to do that?!

If Microsoft wanted a hi-capacity optical disc for some next generation game
platform, I guess they wouldn't have much to choose from. Licensing a
well-known Sony technology like Blu-ray would not go down well at all with
Microsoft since they are such staunch enemies, but if they use HD DVD
optical technology, then the game platform won't have pre-recorded HD movies
available (at least current ones). They are stuck!

I heard of the announcement on Friday, and my reading of the article cited
by Bert is that Microsoft is in negotiation mode, but not necessarily with
Toshiba.

If you google for "microsoft drops hd dvd" you get about a bazillion hits.
Microsoft acknowledged over the weekend (I think) that they're dropping the
HD DVD player accessory, and those players still available at retail will
have their price lowered to $49. See, e.g.,
