[opendtv] Re: Martin: 15% of Stations Face Smaller DTV-Coverage Areas

At my last house here in Gainesville I had my rotor antenna on the mast of a deceased E* dish, making it maybe 15' high. I had zero luck picking up either any Jax or Orlando stations with either of my 3rd generation PCHD cards (MyHD, Dvico F3Q) or my Accurian tuner. I think I also tried the digital tuner of my newer Vizio TV once I got it but can't remember for sure.

Cox cable finally reached an agreement to carry the Orlando NBC in HD a bit after I moved here and after that I made few further efforts towards OTA.

Though I still can't get CW in HD here. If I want to watch Smallville or Supernatural I have to download them. Analog cable looks pretty yucky on an HDTV here.

I may do some OTA experimenting here again at my new place but only after the Feb shutoff and the new probable NBC affiliate going live maybe in Jan. I'd consider anything before that just transitory anyway now, so I'll wait. I'm still sort of hoping that things get re-arranged a bit somehow and with the analog stations off the air I'll find a way to get Jax CW. I don't think I'd bother to put my antenna back up just to pick up the Gainesville CW as a low bit rate 480i sub-channel off the ABC antenna.

In most parts of the country, markets have less geographical separation.
Like -- say -- the Atlantic seaboard.

First I want to say, I'm *very* glad to see that the FCC acknowledges

Wilmington was able to get some channels from Raleigh.

We do not have access to adjacent market signals, unless you want to put up a 50 foot tower and pray that you can get enough margin for digital reception of the stations in Jacksonville and Orlando.

We get these stations via CABLE.

We get these stations because stations in other markets are willing to pay to get them to the cable head ends in Gainesville and Ocala, primarily via dedicated microwave links.

Personally, I think that the FCC is WRONG to be concerned about the ability to receive out of market stations; why have a market based system if you are going to help out-of-market stations compete with in-market stations.

In reality, what the FCC is trying to protect is the LEGACY of market-into-market "interference." They are protecting historic limitations of the analog broadcast system and the coverage quirks that came along with a broadcast infrastructure that radiates out-of-market signals into adjacent markets.

It seems inconsistent that they should protect some out-of-market competition, but prohibit it (and protect broadcasters in most markets). Sure its nice to get secondary services - you are a huge beneficiary of this coverage quirk. But this just points to the inconsistency of the legacy service and the decision NOT to fix this with the transition to digital.
