VCRs were down 66.3% for the first 12 weeks of 2004 compared to the same period in 2003. Direct-view was UP 7%. My ten-week running average is up 3.8%. So-called "Digital Television" sales to U.S. dealers for the 12th week were 85,124 units. For the first 12 weeks of the year, there were 880,118 units. "Digital Televisions" (most of which are HDTV displays without DTT-reception capability) accounted for about 14.4% of the TVs (not counting plasma or direct-view LCD) sold to U.S. dealers so far this year. It may be worth noting here what that means. Over 85% of the TVs sold so far this year were still plain non-H/DTV direct-view TVs with picture tubes. To qualify as a "Digital Television," a display need only be capable of dealing with at least 480p; it need not be capable of either receiving digital signals or displaying them. Devices actually capable of receiving DTT signals were still a small fraction of those numbers. - Ads for set-top DTT receivers: I'm aware of only the Samsung at J&R. - The ads The prices on the Sony plasma and LCD products at Best Buy were advertised as "before savings," but no savings were listed for those. -
