The system has to make sense, or it won't work. The existence of STBs, during a transitional period, perhaps even longer term for special needs, had better make economic sense. The way it's supposed to work is very simple. If one manufacturer decides to try to rip off consumers by offering only integrated sets, that manufacturer cannot prevent someone else from filling the hole. The simple fact is, most consumers don't want to just trash a new set, to please the rip-off artists. So demand will create supply. The STB market won't last all that long (unless the standards keep changing, of course), but while it lasts, it will make some OEMs a pretty penny. That's how it's SUPPOSED to work.
