I am about to post four articles that have been published since 2015 that take
rather strong views (warning - some contain offensive speech), about the Net
Neutrality debate.
In light of the riots that took place in Charlottesville this weekend, there
have been a number of commentaries calling on the government to regulate - or
protect - free speech on the Internet. Several, including the author of the
first article, are calling for the regulation of Google, Facebook, Twitter and
other Internet services as Pubic Utilities, possibly under Title II. These
voices are calling on Congress or the FCC to protect free speech, possibly
adding some additional "Net Neutrality" rules:
These solutions need not be excessively burdensome or intrusive. They could
focus on creating a simple regulatory regime that would ensure these
monopolistic companies:
Do not censor any content that is compliant with the First Amendment to the
United States Constitution; and
Do not fully demonetize any user’s content, pulling ads from posts only when
the advertiser has requested such action be taken.
