Typically VOD is routed as a So? The unjoin filtered back to the server can pause the multicast transmission. What makes you think that a multicast session just 'plays out' no matter what? Its just a socket. By the same principle, what makes you think that pausing a unicast session will leave the transmit and receive sockets open indefinitely? They will close, and be re-opened/initiated after the receiver sends an OOB request back to resume playback. With one vs. the other it is actually simpler and less effort from a system point of view to deliver everything as multicast.
