I was digging to my inbox' ibc05 subfolder, and in light of some of the
recent discussion on screen height/width ratio's, filling the arcs of
vision, and so on, I found this to be an interesting demo, last year the
were showing edge blending using two projectors on a concave screen:

IBC 2005: The Surround Cinema Fraunhofer FIRST presents its digital dome
projection system For some years now, the operators of 3D and IMAX cinemas
have been projecting high-quality images on to curved sur-faces, giving
viewers the impression of being in the middle of the action. But the thrills
come at a price. Such cinemas re-quire special projectors weighing several
tons. Complex and expensive technologies are needed for filming and
projection. Fraunhofer FIRST has been addressing this problem and will
present an easy-to-use solution for digital dome projection at the IBC in
Amsterdam. This allows digital images and videos to be displayed on a
concave hemisphere using standard pro-jectors and PCs. The dome videos'
resolution of 3072 x 3072 pixels is superior to the 2048 x 4096 pixel
offered by digital cinema. You are cordially invited to an individual
presentation: Time: From September 9th 12 noon to September 13th 4 p.m.
Place: IBC Amsterdam, Hall 8, Stand 221 The digital dome projection
technology developed by FIRST performs image distortion correction in real
time using special autocalibrating software. This enables the system to
respond immediately to any changes in the technical conditions within the
dome. With six projectors each generating a part of the overall image, the
autocalibrating software also ensures seam-less blending, i.e. perfect
alignment of the partial images without any visible seams. Another advantage
is the integra-tion of a show player, enabling the technology to be used for
multimedia presentations incorporating other media as well as films. Like a
video-editing program, the show player allows the integration of different
components such as graphics, texts, movies and audio. The player also
synchronizes and plays the various components, making it unnecessary to
compute the whole video before projection - as is still required when using
conventional video-editing programs. In principle, this technology can be
used with all different shapes of projection surfaces and combinations of
projectors. It is suitable for deployment not only in digital cinemas and
product presentations but also in planetariums.
