We are talking about a cable STB, used with a TV,
No, Craig. You have a habit of driving arguments into the ditch, because you
make a habit of circular reasoning. With IP distribution, you do not need a
proprietary middle box at all, as I said. At most, at home, you need a modem.
To watch IP content on a TV set, same thing. That's why I asked if you had
ever heard of connected TVs.
There you go again. All that is relevant here is that a cable company is adding
the ability to access OTT content through the STB used to access the digital
MVPD service.
And even if we WERE talking about IP distribution, you need both a modem and a
wireless router at a minimum to watch OTT content. The device you watch the
content on must be capable of setting up the stream and decoding it. That
capability is built into smart phons and tablets, and most laptops. It MAY be
built into a TV, or you MAY need another box to view OTT content on a TV.
ENOUGH ALREADY...
If you already knew about connected TVs, then you should have gone back and
erased the pointless argument. There are any number of IP appliances that
don't require any STB, or do you go around carrying an STB with your
smartphone, Craig?
Get over it Bert. You're making us dizzy with this circular argument. I
explained all of this in the first post. The reason we do not need a STB with
phones and tablets was also explained it is called TV Everywhere, which makes
the MVPD content we are paying for accessible via the Internet for paying
subscribers.
Because it is nothing like TVE,
Let's see. TVE uses IP, but it still requires the user to rent a cable box
and to have an MVPD subscription.
Not true. There is no requirement to rent a cable box. You can use a cable
card, or a TiVo Bolt. The whole point is you are getting OTT access to the
content you are paying for with the MVPD subscription. Although analog cable is
finally on its way out, analog subscribers did not need a STB, yet they also
have access to TVE.
Even though the appliances he uses to view the content don't require
proprietary STB or non-neutral infrastructures. So, both schemes force the IP
appliance user to retain the rented proprietary box and to retain a
subscription to a non-neutral infrastructure. In both cases, theis is THE
goal.
Box rental is optional, not a requirement. The whole point of the FCC NPRM on
STBs is to open this market up. As for non-neutral infrastructures, you're
wrong again, but focusing on the pipe or the box completely misses the point.
You can subscribe to Dish Sling and access that MVPD bundle through your
"neutral" DSL service. Or Sony PSVue, and maybe Hulu next year. The point of
TVE is that it extends access to content that a person is paying for - the
subscription is the enabling factor, not the infrastructure. TVE does not care
if you get cable, FIOS, DBS or a new VMVPD service. And it does not care if you
are renting. STB.
And Craig claims they are nothing alike.
Because they are not Hail Mary's.
We obviously disagree.
Nothing new there. Looks like the sky is still falling in Bert's world...
Give it up Bert. 68% is still the majority of U.S. homes,
Give it up, Craig, and consider trend lines.
The trend lines say the majority of U.S. Homes will continue to pay for a MVPD
or VMVPD service for many years to come.
