Sure. The device you're watching on. Ever heard of connected TVs? Or watching
TV on a smartphone or on a PC? Separate STBs, or in my case the separate
computer, are only there to provide what the TV set lacks. They are certainly
not mandatory, nor do I have to pay rent to anyone. I went the PC route after
becoming disgusted with the half-baked solutions that exist out there.
I explained this. You are being redundant.
So indeed, these schemes, JUST LIKE TVE, have the aim of keeping the faithful
into the monthly rental fees and the MVPD subscription fees.
Obviously. I explained this too. Adding OTT capabilities to a MVPD STB is
primarily an ease-of-use, integration issue for those who WANT the MVPD service.
Even for services that are delivered without the need for these extras. Why
is this a hail mary? Because, to obtain content delivered over the Internet,
you are still required to rent the legacy box and subscribe to the legacy
delivery system.
But that's the point Bert.
It is not a Hail Mary, it is simply offering a capability some subscribers may
find desirable.
Most people want BOTH.
More and more doubtful. Most people have inertia, and yet only 68%, most
recent figure we have seen, still feel compelled to have both. You are
getting to the point where "most want" is probably already false. Most do,
maybe.
That figure is unrelated to this subject and the percentage only reflects the
group that was surveyed by Consumer Reports.
But we do know that the vast majority of homes want both because they are
paying for both.
Is called contracts for rights Bert.
Whatever, Craig. If I can watch CW and Univision online anyway, the fact that
they aren't available over this proprietary rental box seems
counterintuitive. Just giving me a formula answer doesn't explain anything.
You can watch some ad supported VOD from these networks. You cannot watch the
live feeds.
It is easy to argue that were Univision and CW *also* available on this
proprietary rental box, then those who use the proprietary rental box would
for sure be paying retrans consent fees to those two channels. Right? Because
they would have to have the MVPD subscription (and pay the rental fee), and
they might just keep doing so for some time. Contractual rights or not, it
seems on the face of it like another example of "too much greed for their own
good."
Or maybe just the reality that existing contracts prevent the MVPD from
offering this specific content.
Regards
Craig
