Its almost too tragic to contemplate the fate of US OTA TV: the wrong system was chosen, the wrong business model, and Nat Ostroff's comments about hanging caused me to think of the fate of Candide and Dr Pangloss all those centuries ago. Meantime COFDM = Creating Opportunities for Doing MORE, has enabled DTV in Asia, the EU, Australia, Japan, possibly Brazil and for FLO/Hiwire/Modeo in the US. Over the last eight years on this reflector the clear thinkers have been Craig, John Shutt, Frank Eory, the mysterious flyback (nice moniker btw) and a few others. There really is nothing new: 'As to Pangloss, he evidently had a lurking consciousness that his theory required unceasing exertions, and all his ingenuity, to sustain it. Yet he stuck to it to the last; his thinking and talking faculties could hardly be diverted from it for a moment. He seized every occasion to say to Candide, "All the events in this best of possible worlds are admirably connected. If a single, link in the great chain were omitted, the harmony of the entire universe would be destroyed. If you had not been expelled from that beautiful castle, with those cruel kicks, for your love to Miss Cunegonde; if you had not been imprisoned by the inquisition; if you had not travelled over a great portion of America on foot; if you had not plunged your sword through the baron; if you had not lost all the sheep you brought from that fine country, Eldorado, together with the riches with which they were laden, you would not be here to-day, eating preserved citrons, and pistachio nuts." "That's very well said, and may all be true," said Candide; "but let's cultivate our garden." ' The two Panglossian figures on the reflector are evident in all of this which is moderately amusing and singularly boring by turn but alas US OTA TV is now a sunset industry unlike in other trading blocs. I remain stunned that US broadcasters should have allowed this to happen. Kind Regards, Dermot Nolan the dn where Freeview DTV is on the cusp of overtaking DBS, now why might this be? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can UNSUBSCRIBE from the OpenDTV list in two ways: - Using the UNSUBSCRIBE command in your user configuration settings at FreeLists.org - By sending a message to: opendtv-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with the word unsubscribe in the subject line.
