Earth to Bert...
We have discussed this possibility for several years. We've even seen pictures
of small cells on telephone poles for cellular (not wireless data to the home).
The only useful news in this article - again not something we did not know - s
that in markets where there is competition, pricing comes down significantly.
There is one more bit of good news. With the new administration and Pai at the
FCC, we are likely to see a more relaxed regulatory environment that will
encourage the major players to invest in this hybrid infrastructure.
Then everyone will have the ability to access all the "fake news" on the
Internet...
;-)

Craig

Now we're talkin'. But of course, the title is totally misleading. This
"Google Fiber 2.0" is no FTTH system, attempting to compete against an
incumbent cabled broadband infrastructure. It's a heck of a lot more
interesting. This is wireless broadband. The fact that there's a fiber
backhaul network involved hardly differentiates this from any other wireless
broadband system, be it fixed or mobile.
This might be the beginning of the era of competing fixed wireless broadband
systems. I would expect wireless to be far more likely to provide
affordable-to-deploy competition for broadband service to households, than a
large number of cabled systems would ever have a chance of doing.
No doubt, the incumbent local monopolies, or at best dupolies, won't be
pleased. A real game changer.
