I suppose one new initiative that is much ballhyhooed is HTML5, right? Flash RTMP was a "most inclusive" de-facto standard, in the sense that almost all video web sites went to it (and yes, that too began supporting H.264 some time ago). But now Apple has changed that, thanks to not supporting it, for questionable reasons, on their hand held devices. The actual compression algorithm used is almost an orthogonal discussion.

Perhaps everyone will be migrating to HTML5, at which point companies like Apple and now perhaps Google too, will find a good excuse to introduce some other incompatibility.

It's odd how different countries like to play these games for TV OTA broadcast standards, while it is private companies that play these games when it comes to MVPD or to Internet distribution.
