So what are most inclusive set of standards and what are new

I suppose one new initiative that is much ballhyhooed is HTML5, right? Flash
RTMP was a "most inclusive" de-facto standard, in the sense that almost all
video web sites went to it (and yes, that too began supporting H.264 some
time ago). But now Apple has changed that, thanks to not supporting it, for
questionable reasons, on their hand held devices. The actual compression
algorithm used is almost an orthogonal discussion.
Perhaps everyone will be migrating to HTML5, at which point companies like
Apple and now perhaps Google too, will find a good excuse to introduce some
other incompatibility.
It's odd how different countries like to play these games for TV OTA
broadcast standards, while it is private companies that play these games
when it comes to MVPD or to Internet distribution.
