They are doing some research with the Stirling engine here at UNLV:

The solar reflector provides the calories.

Nevada Power also has some of these in use to generate power.

There are some problems:  1) they are not realizing the efficiencies that
are theoretically possible, and 2) they are not very reliable, requiring
repairs quite often.  But this engine is still in the development phase.

Very Intersting.

Another solution is the hibrid car powered by Stlirling Engine.
Stirling Engine is a very simple "closed circuit" thermal motor.
