Free-to-view DTV now in 25% of Australian homes

Digital Broadcasting Australia (DBA), the not-for-profit industry group coordinating the transition to digital-only broadcasting, says take-up of free-to-view digital TV has passed the 2m mark, or around 25% of Australia's 7.8m homes.

In the last quarter of 2006, 302,000 free-to-view DTV receivers?including set-top boxes, digital TV recorders and integrated digital TV sets?were sold to retailers and installers, raising the cumulative total shipped to more than 2.3m since DTV transmissions began.

DBA said when allowing for 125,000 receivers still in shops, and the 175,000 homes with more than one free-to-view receiver, the actual take-up stood at 2m by December 31, 2006.

The last quarter of 2006 saw "strong retail demand" for flat-screens equipped with digital tuners; integrated digital TVs took 53% of total DTV sales to retailers and installers.
