Analog TV was obsolete about 3 years after it was introduced. But clever
upgrading of the standard kept it alive into the color era.

NTSC was obsolete after PAL and SECAM were published, ca. 1963, so it
could be said to be obsolete after 10 short years. But clever product
improvement kept it going another half century, although no one had any
illusions that NTSC (or PAL and SECAM) were anywhere close to state of
the art for that long.

ATSC is like many other standards. They are close to obsolete the minute
they are published. What keeps standards alive is constant updates. Or
acceptance that they are obsolete but still useful (like NTSC for most
of its existence).
