The Internet IS fundamentally different from what came before. What is not different is the desire of the politicians and the utility industries they regulate to continue to produce huge amounts of revenue for the State and Federal governments.

It's not the oil companies, it is governments at all levels.

The same is true for utilities...

All because some industrial tycoons went to the politicians with a grand idea just over a century ago.

That idea was that utilities SHOULD BE operated as "natural monopolies" and should be regulated by the government.

The first Federal Excise tax on telephone service was passed in to pay for the Spanish American War. It was "permanently" reinstated in 1932 and has been re-authorized 29 times. THe history and scope of the Excise taxes is an interesting read...
