They "care" so much that they make all of the premium material 16:9. What makes these programmers so coy about SD ads and SD versions of HDTV programs??

Let me count the ways...

Broadcasters serve a disproportionate percentage of laggards, a large percentage of which are still using older NTSC TVs. So 4:3 is still important, maybe even more important for broadcasters...

Many stations still are not shooting 16:9 SD much less HD. So they can only produce local commercials in 4:3.

There are very large international markets for older 4:3 programming and 4:3 versions of new shows. This is a major reason that most widescreen, made for TV shows, do not have any critical action outside of the 4:3 safe action area.
