I think that in practice today, LCD and plasma panels
do not do what you are wanting them to do. And that
was my point.

I think that the DVD player/STB/PVR are the units that
perform the function of a PC's video card. They must
be set to know the display's correct aspect ratio.

The signal then goes to the display, and is sized
according to that display's own pixel structure.

So I'm not talking about old CRTs, Craig. I'm saying
that as of now, if the DVD player is not told of the
aspect ratio of the display, the image to that display
will either be distorted or it may have black bars,
even black bars all around. I can easily make this
happen at home, so I know for a fact that the display
is not as smart as you think it is.

Which means that standard aspect ratios are necessary,
so the DVD/STB/PVR manufacturers know what to provide
as options in their setup menus.

Just as PC video card manufacturers have to know the
aspect ratio of any monitor likely to be connected to
the PC.

Could things be different? YES! But this is now.
