I get more of a sense of how big the picture is from knowing the screen width.
This is part of the message in the piece about Aspect Ratios by Kerns Powers

His point in a truncated version of this piece is that in a theater the height 
of the screen is more or less constant, while the width varies depending on the 
film being presented.
