Hi,

Bert Manfredi (to Craig):

I have at home a 30" LCD TV, 1280x768p panel resolution and
square pixels. So yes, it has 16:10 aspect ratio, not 16:9.
Future LCD TVs will tend towards 16:9, I can promise you that,
but this is now. The input image is up-scaled from Nx576i to
1280x768p. The value of N depends on the sample clock frequency.

You (I) can choose between "16:9" and "Widescreen" modes, and
(IIRC) in the "16:9" mode there are small black bars (24 lines
each) at the top and bottom (reducing it to 1280x720p).
I think that in the "Widescreen" mode the picture is slightly
distorted then, being vertically stretched by 11%. I think.

With scalers, especially non-linear scalers ("panorama" mode),
we can basically make whatever we want.

I set up the player to 16:9 (anamorphic), of course, and
then let the TV do the scaling. It has to up-scale anyway.

The 768 lines are a gift from the panel maker, who did not
(yet) want to lose compatibility with 1024x768 XGA, but also
did not want to make 1366 pixels width yet because he wanted
to offer native resolution support for 1280x720p ATSC.

The trend on the SID exhibition was that all LCD sizes from 37"
up will sooner or later have 1920x1080p resolution, and true 16:9.
Setting a computer for 1080p isn't too difficult anymore either.

Greetings,
-- Jeroen
